이 유전자는 basic helix-loop-helix(bHLH)와 leucine zipper 구조적 특징을 모두 포함하는 전사인자(transcription factor)를 암호화합니다. 이 전사인자는 멜라노사이트(melanocytes)와 망막 색소 상피(retinal pigment epithelium)의 분화 및 발달을 조절하며, 멜라닌 생성 효소 유전자(melanogenesis enzyme genes)의 색소세포 특이적 전사를 담당합니다.

이 유전자에 대한 이형접합 돌연변이(heterozygous mutations)는 Waardenburg syndrome type 2 및 Tietz syndrome과 같은 청각-색소 증후군(auditory-pigmentary syndromes)을 유발합니다. 또한, 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variants)가 확인되었습니다.
